Traveling along the French Riviera is easy and flexible, whether you prefer public transport or the freedom of your own car. For an eco-friendly option, regional TER trains connect major towns like Marseille, Toulon, Cannes, Antibes, and Nice, offering scenic and comfortable travel without the hassle of driving. Tickets and schedules can be found on the official SNCF Connect website at www.sncf-connect.com.
If you prefer more independence—especially for exploring smaller villages or coastal roads—renting a car from Marseille Provence Airport is a convenient choice. And mostly recommended to visit south of France. Well-known providers such as Sixt, Rent a Car and Europcar operate directly from the airport, offering a range of vehicles including hybrids and electric models, which are ideal for minimizing your environmental impact while maintaining flexibility. With good road conditions and well-signposted routes, getting around by car allows you to shape your itinerary as you go, stopping wherever the scenery calls.
Day 1 – 2: Marseille - Where History Meets Modern Vibes
Our adventure begins in Marseille, the ancient city that wears its age with pride. Explore the vibrant street art scene that injects life into every corner, and let the tempting aromas of the food markets guide you to culinary delights.
Marseille has more to offer than just city charm. Nature beckons from the nearby Calanques national park, a haven of cliffs and greenery that lead to hidden coves with crystal-clear waters. This is the epitome of the French Riviera – a harmonious blend of refreshing swims, balmy evenings, mouthwatering cuisine, and awe-inspiring sights.
Where to Stay in Marseille
To make the most of your stay, choose accommodations near the old port (Vieux Port). This central location ensures easy access to the city’s attractions and allows you to soak up the vibrant ambiance day and night.
If you are seeking for more charm and intimacy, I would like to recommend you my favorite discovered hidden gem: Chateau Beaupin Marseille. This lovely Boutique Hotel is located in the old and chic area of Marseille near the National Park des Calanques. It is a lovely and intimate haven of peace in this bustling city. A bit off-center, you can easily commute by car or taxi for your visit to the city center.
You will appreciate the architecture of a lovely mansion from the XXth century, previously owned by a rich shipowner and merchant, the testimony of Marseille’s vibrant maritime history. Old charm, and a” like at home” feeling is to be expected, however if you are seeking for more standardized service than you should rather drive your choice towards international hotel chains like Sofitel Marseille or Intercontinental Hotel Dieu Marseille, which offers International luxury service standards.
Getting to Marseille
Despite its southern location, Marseille is well connected by train to other French cities and European destinations. Opt for a scenic train journey from London, Paris, Rotterdam, Amsterdam…, and relish the stunning landscapes along the way. If air travel is more your style and convenient, Marseille has its own airport with connections to various international destinations, offering a convenient gateway to your French Riviera escapade.
What to do in Marseille ?
– Explore the Vieux Port in the morning: Start your day at the city’s heart with a little café in terrasse while you take in the fisherman atmosphere, local market and stroll along the harbor.
– Discover Le Panier: Marseille’s oldest neighborhood. Enjoy a maze of narrow streets brimming with colorful facades, charming boutiques, and trendy art galleries, a combination of bohemian and street culture all in one place very typical of Marseilles’s modern energy.
– Take a boat tour to the Calanques and enjoy the beauty of a stunning series of rocky inlets along the coastline. Note that Marseille tends to get very windy with the Mistral – strong wind coming from the Alps, and would not recommend you to go out at sea on a windy day.
– Indulge in Marseille’s culinary scene: Treat our taste buds to the vibrant flavors of Marseille’s cuisine. Savor local specialties like bouillabaisse (traditional fish stew), aioli (a garlicky mayonnaise) and panisse (savory chickpea deep-fried snacks).
– Admire a breathtaking view of the city and its natural surroundings from one of its emblematic Cathedrale, Nore Dame de la Garde, also known as ‘La Bonne Mère’ by locals.
– Finally if Art and culture is your thing you can also plan a visit to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations MuCEM. This architectural building houses a vast collection of art, artifacts, and exhibitions that showcase the diverse culture of the Mediterranean region.
Day 3 – 4: Cassis - Serenity by the Coast
Just a short 30-minute drive from Marseille, Cassis awaits with open arms, ready to embrace you in its tranquility. Step into this postcard-worthy town and feel the pace of life slow down. Admire the pastel-colored houses that grace the picturesque harbor and surrender to the tantalizing flavors of the local cuisine served in charming restaurants.
Don’t miss the chance to explore Cassis’ vibrant market, a treasure of locally sourced delights and savoir-faire. Grab a shopping bag and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere as you handpick the finest ingredients to taste for beach snacks or sunset aperitive.
Cassis is also a great departure city to discover the Calanques and allows you to reach the closest one which are a 15minutes walk from the city, very convenient and still charming.
What to do in Cassis ?
– Explore the Calanques: Cassis’s Calanques are just beautiful and will give you Greek island vibes. Embark on a boat tour or hike through the stunning Calanques National Park, a series of breathtaking limestone cliffs and turquoise waters. Discover hidden coves and enjoy the scenic beauty of this Mediterranean gem. The first and closest main Calanques Port-Miou, and Calanques de Port-Pin are easy to reach by walk. However, Calanques d’en Vau, a bit further located, can be reached by an approximately one-hour hike and is more recommended for sportive visitors. The journey can be a hustle during hot days and for visitors who are not prepared for the hike. So prepare your visit with water, solar cream, and hiking shoes. Note that the access to the Calanques is prohibited on windy days. This to prevent any risk of wildfire. – Visit the Village: Take a leisurely stroll through the charming streets of Cassis Village. Admire the pastel-colored buildings, browse through boutique shops offering local products and souvenirs, and stop by one of the trendy cafes for a refreshing drink. A local market takes place every Wednesday and Friday morning in the main area of the port, and every summer, starting from July to August, a night market with local producers and handcraft products takes place every night on the central plaza, ideal for a few local vibes and shopping ideas.
– Wine Tasting at Domaine du Paternel: Indulge in the exquisite flavors of Cassis wines at Domaine du Paternel. This renowned vineyard offers a chic and sophisticated wine tasting experience, where you can sample their award-winning white and rosé wines.
– Visit Cap Canaille and enjoy a breathtaking sunset: Take a scenic drive or hike to Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in France. Admire the panoramic views of the azure sea and the stunning coastal landscape. It’s the perfect spot for a chic picnic or a romantic sunset vantage point.

When it comes to fine dining, La Villa Madie stands out as Cassis’s crown jewel. Perched above the water in Anse de Corton, this three‑star Michelin establishment—helmed by chef Dimitri Droisneau—celebrates the flavors of Provence with delicate, inventive dishes that beautifully marry sea and land. For a more authentic, lively vibe right on the harbour, La Poissonnerie Laurent is a go-to. This bustling seafood spot delivers fresh catches in a relaxed atmosphere—perfect for those who seek genuine charm and good coastal fare without the formality.

Getting to Cassis
Since Cassis is just a stone’s throw away from Marseille, it’s best to use Marseille as your transportation hub. Hop on a train from Marseille, and in a mere 20 minutes, you’ll find yourself in Cassis, ready to embrace its coastal beauty. The train ride is not only quick but also budget-friendly, with a ticket costing around 5 EUR.
La Ciotat: A Hidden Jewel Between Cliffs and Cinema
Local Pro Tips: If you follow me through socials, you’ve probably seen me mention this city many times—and that’s because I genuinely love the unique charm it has to offer. If you’re looking for new destinations and a more authentic experience, you should definitely consider a visit to La Ciotat.
Just a few minutes’ drive from Cassis—or only 10 minutes by train—La Ciotat is a mid-size city with a truly singular landscape. In 2019, its striking coastline was named one of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. It’s also home to the world’s first cinema, where the Lumière brothers premiered L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat in 1895 at the historic Eden Théâtre. Beyond the cultural heritage, the city is framed by some of the most incredible cliffs and calanques on the Mediterranean—wilder and less crowded than those near Cassis, and perfect for hiking, boat tours, or just soaking in the views.
Don’t Miss the Bouillabaisse Traditionnelle at This Breath Taking Address Above the Sea
Just a short ride from Cassis, La Ferme Auberge de la Baie des Anges in La Ciotat offers one of the most authentic culinary moments on the coast. Set high above the bay—named one of the most beautiful in the world—the restaurant serves a traditional bouillabaisse made from freshly caught rock fish, herbs, and love. It’s prepared the old-fashioned way and must be reserved at least 48 hours in advance. Served in two stages, first the broth, then the fish, this is a must-experience for gourmets seeking true Provençal flavor in an unforgettable setting.

Day 5: Saint-Tropez - Where Glamour Meets Authentic Charm

– Explore the Old Town and Port of Saint-Tropez: Immerse yourself in the charm of Saint Tropez’s Old Town. Wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets, browse through high-end boutiques and art galleries, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and charm of this iconic village. Get a sit on a cafe terrasse, like the historical famous Sennequier and admire the luxurious yachts, people-watch at the trendy cafes and restaurants, and soak up the glamorous ambiance of this renowned harbor.
– Make your way up to the citadel, perched high on a hill overlooking the town. The views are magical, especially during the enchanting sunrise and sunset moments.
– Relax on Pampelonne Beach: Indulge in the ultimate beach experience at Pampelonne Beach. Lounge on a luxurious sunbed, sip on cocktails at one of the trendy beach clubs, and take in the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Where to stay in Saint-Tropez

The closest airport to Saint-Tropez is Toulon, just a scenic 50-minute drive away. Alternatively, you can opt for Nice airport, which is approximately 90 minutes away but offers more flight options.
To avoid traffic and for more comfort and convenience you can also reach St-Tropez by helicopter or private plan. I highly recommend Heli Securité (BLADE) for their services and great disponibility. I have tested and the experience has always been very smooth.
Public transportation to Saint-Tropez can be a bit tricky since there’s no train station in town. However, you can take a train from Nice to the nearest station, ‘St Raphael,’ which takes around 50 minutes. From there, a taxi ride of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes will whisk you away to the charming shores of Saint-Tropez.
Day 6: Cannes (or Antibes & Juan Les Pins) - Where Glamour Takes a Stroll
Welcome to the dazzling world of Cannes. You have probably heard of this coastal town due to its worldwide reknown Film Festival that takes place every year in May. Well let me tell, you that even if you visit the city out of its festival dates, you are going to love discovering luxury and tradition dancing hand in hand on the French Riviera. This seaside paradise has been a playground for the rich and famous for ages, and it’s time for you to join the party !
Prepare to be mesmerized as you enjoy a delightful walk along La Croisette, a magnificent promenade adorned with elegant Belle Epoque buildings that exude aristocratic charm. Cannes is a city that sparkles with glamour, where celebrities and billionaires have flocked for generations.
Immerse yourself in the lap of luxury with a visit to the city’s haute couture boutiques and upscale dining establishments. While the renowned Cannes Film Festival may steal the spotlight, there’s a whole world of wonder waiting to be explored beyond the glitz and glamour. I had an interesting conversation with the Tourism Office Director of Cannes, about the tourism promotion of the city. Indeed, the festival bring a lot of worldwide famous actors and actressses as well as very popular and wealthy people which can give the feeling that the city has nothing else to offer than this luxury bustling scene. But a lot of effort are gathered by local business and tourism stakeholders to promote a different side of the city and give an enjoyable set of activities and enrich the city offer as a leisure travel destination.
Lose yourself in the famous weekly market, where tantalizing treats and hidden treasures await, or wander through the historic streets of the old town (Le Suquet) to discover captivating murals that add an artistic flair to the cityscape.
Alternatively, should you crave a change of scenery, a visit to the nearby town of Antibes & Juan les Pins might be just the ticket!
